March 28, 2025, 19:49 – Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney informed U.S. President Donald Trump that Canada plans to implement retaliatory tariffs on American goods next week in response to the expected White House taxes on imports, as well as a new tariff on cars and other parts announced on Wednesday.
“The Prime Minister informed the U.S. president that his government would implement retaliatory tariffs to protect Canadian workers and the Canadian economy,” said the Canadian Prime Minister’s Office in a press release.
“The leaders agreed to begin negotiations for a new economic and security relationship immediately after the election,” the statement read, referring to Canada’s federal election scheduled for April 28.
Meanwhile, trade talks are expected to “intensify to address immediate concerns,” the statement added.
Friday’s call was the first between the two leaders.
Carney’s office described it as a “very constructive conversation,” and Trump said in a social media post that the call was “extremely productive.”
Carney warned yesterday that Canada’s relationship with the U.S. had fundamentally changed due to the tariff threats from the Trump administration and said that Canada has “a number of measures we can take in response.”
